Pencil portrait

There is a portrait contest on at my work this week, and I thought I would give it a go.

Unfortunately I was a bit rushed for time this week, and the rules stipulate pencil only and minimum A4 size which is not my usual way of working. However I decided to push myself  and give it a try. Pencil drawing is not one of my best strengths as the detail can take so much time to do that I can sometimes be less patient than with paint.

I thought by entering it would force me to work in a medium that I have been avoiding for a while. I love to work in colour but practicing this has shown me that it is important to work outside of your comfort zone. The lady in the portrait is not someone I know as I was limited for time (one day) to get my submission in I just found a photograph from a magazine lying around. I would like to do more portraits working from life in the future to improve on my shading and portriat technique.
